Jubilee 2025
24 December 2024 - 6th January 2026
In 2025, the Church celebrates a year of Jubilee.
A jubilee in the Catholic Church is a year of forgiveness, reconciliation, and reconnection with fellow Catholics that takes place every 25 years. It's also known as a "Holy Year", or the Year of the Lord's favour.
Jubilees are marked by:
-
Opening the Holy Door
The Jubilee Year begins with the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. The Pope also grants permission for Holy Doors to be opened in other locations around the world. Pilgrims pass through the Holy Doors at each of the four papal basilicas in Rome.
-
Encouraging pilgrimages
The Jubilee Year is a time to encourage the faithful to embark on pilgrimages.
-
Remission of sins
The faithful can ask for a plenary indulgence, which is a remission of sins for themselves or deceased loved ones.

The Ordinary Jubilee Year and Indulgences
You can be sorry for something; you can confess your guilt, and the person hurt or offended can forgive you. But that does not mean to say that everything is as it was before.... read more of Bishop Terence Patrick's reflection on Indulgences in the Jubilee Year here
Please also read Bishop Terry’s letter Ordinary Jubilee Year 2025 (click here) which explains more fully how and why to obtain a Plenary Indulgence. A plenary indulgence grants remission and forgiveness of your sins but can be offered instead for the souls in Purgatory.
